Similar species: This moth can be separated from similar British species by the combination of a dense, black furry head and thorax, plus the inwardly bowed tornal blotch.
Forewing: 4 to 5mm
Habitats: Heathland, woodland and birch scrub.
Habits: The moth flies in sunshine. It occasionally comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva mines along the edge of a birch leaf. The mine is widened to form a large blotch.
