Similar species: Males and females of Common Swift Korscheltellus lupulina have broader, brighter markings with a pale streak running close to the trailing edge which starts at the wing base. They also have a white central marking near the leading edge rather than a grey triangle edged in white. Females of Map-winged Swift Korscheltellus fusconebulosa have a chequered fringe and usually brighter, more prominent markings.

Forewing: M 12 to 18mm, F 15 to 26mm

Habitats: Gardens, road verges, woodland clearings and rides, downland and other rough grassland.

Habits: The moth is nocturnal. It flies from dusk and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the roots of Bracken, Broad-leaved Dock, Dandelion, Viper's Bugloss and other plants. It possibly overwinters twice as a larva and pupates underground.
