Common / Immigrant

Similar species:

Forewing: 9 to 12mm

Habitats: Wherever Bird-cherry is found.

Habits: The moth comes to light. It is an immigrant as well as a resident in southern Britain.

Foodplant: The gregarious larva feeds on the leaves of Bird Cherry and when the food supply is exhausted possibly others in the cherry family. It feeds from within a dense and extensive web which may cover several whole trees and the surrounding vegetation. There are pictures on the internet of bicycles and whole cars enveloped in their silk. Pupation takes place in a cocoon in the web. On the European mainland it has been reported feeding on Wild Plum, Sour Cherry, Dwarf Cherry, Laurel and Rowan.
