Habitats: Deciduous woodland and mature hedgerows with trees.
Habits: It can be found at the bottom of trunks after emergence where it may remain until late morning.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the sound bark of oak and Horse Chestnut. It leaves a small amount of reddish frass protruding from the hole. Pupation takes place in the bark. It is said to prefer the scrubby pollards found in well kept hedgerows.
