Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Habitats: Open woodland, parkland, scrub, orchards and gardens.
Habits: The moth is occasionally found on tree trunks during the day. It is nocturnal and often comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds within the stems and branches of sallows, willows, Wild Privet, Lilac, Hawthorn, Blackthorn, cherries, apples, pears, Ash, Sycamore, birches, Black Currant, Plum, cherries, Wayfairing-tree, elms, Honeysuckle and other deciduous trees and shrubs. The larva overwinters two or three times while feeding within the young stems or branches which are usually less than ten centimetres diameter. It pupates under the bark.
