Habitats: Heathland, damp woodland margins, pond and stream margins and raised bog.
Habits: The male is attracted to pheromone lures and has been recorded at Guilder-rose blossom.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Alder or birches. It lives within the inner wood near the base of the trunk or in the roots. The larva overwinters twice before emerging through a five millimetre exit hole that can be found by looking for a frass pile on the ground below.
