Similar species:
Forewing: 6 to 8mm
Habitats: Ponds, lakes and marshland.
Habits: The wingless female usually stays just under the water surface. The short-lived males fly from dusk onwards over the water or even skimming it and sometimes swarm at light well away from the nearest water. The winged form of the female will also come to light.
Foodplant: The aquatic larva lives in loose spinnings among foodplants such as Canadian Waterweed, pondweeds, stoneworts and filamentous algae. It pupates in a silk cocoon attached to a stem just under the surface.
