Habitats: Hedgerows, downland scrub and open woodland.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds at night on Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Buckthorn, Alder Buckthorn, sallows, plums, cultivated Apple and Crab Apple. It appears to prefer small isolated bushes. When large it rests low down on a main stem during the day. It also pupates low down in a tough cocoon attached to the vegetation.
