Similar species: Lead Belle Scotopteryx mucronata usually has a tear-shaped dot mid-way between the cross-lines on the forewing, although sometimes closer to the third cross-line. Also the white zig-zag crossline in the outer area of the wing is usually more prominent. All of these markings can be variable and if you are unsure of the ID check the genitalia.
Forewing: 15 to 19mm
Habitats: Heathland, moorland, sparse open woodland, scrub areas on downland and coastal shingle.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the leaves of Gorse, Dyer's Greenweed and Petty Whin. It pupates in a cocoon spun in the leaf litter.
