Geometridae

70.051 Red Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe spadicearia ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Common

Similar species: Although generally brighter with a broader, brighter, white outer edge to the bar, with more contrasting markings on the underside of the wings, worn specimens of Red Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe spadicearia with a purplish or blackish band could be mistaken for the uncommon red form of Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe ferrugata. So if worn, check the genitalia. Red Carpet Xanthorhoe decoloraria lacks the white edgings to the red bar on the forewing. It also either lacks or has very faint dark twin spots in the outer area of the forewing.

Forewing: 12 to 13mm

Habitats: Woodland, scrub, hedgerows, gardens, downland, moorland, marshes, fens and coastal sand-dunes.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed from shrubs and herbaceous plants during the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Lady's Bedstraw, Heath Bedstraw, Cleavers and other bedstraws, Ground-ivy, Wild Carrot, Knotgrass and other low-growing plants. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
