Geometridae

70.111 Small White Wave Asthena albulata (Hufnagel, 1767)

Common

Similar species: Satin Wave Idaea subsericeata is only superficially similar as it is not usually as pure white and the grey cross-lines are less pronounced although still reasonably distinct. It also lacks the closely parallel lines running across the centre of the forewing.

Forewing: 9 to 11mm

Habitats: Mature deciduous woodland, overgrown hazel coppice.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from sunset and comes sparingly to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hazel, Hornbeam and sometimes birches and wild roses. It pupates in the leaf litter.
