Similar species: Waved Carpet Hydrelia sylvata is smaller (11 to 13mm), without the dark edging to the cross-band and less significant spikes on the outer edge of the band.
Forewing: 13 to 15mm
Habitats: Open woodland, mountain and lowland moorland, including isolated Rowans on moorland.
Habits: The moth rests on Rowan trunks or occasionally rocks during the day. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds mainly on Rowan and occasionally on birches or Alder. It pupates in loose soil or in the leaf litter.
