Similar species: Cryptic Fern Horisme radicaria is more grey-brown (rather than rufous-brown), usually lacks the small discal dot in the forewing and has stronger cross-lines and apical streaks. If Cryptic Fern is suspected where it has not previously been recorded the genitalia may need to be checked.
Forewing: 14 to 18mm
Habitats: Open woodland, calcareous downland scrub, hedgerows and gardens.
Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed in the day, flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Traveller's-joy, probably cultivated Clematis spp. and possibly buttercups. It pupates in the leaf litter or in the soil.
