Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 17 to 20mm
Habitats: Usually mature deciduous woodland, but also in smaller copses in wooded areas.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Sessile Oak, Pedunculate Oak or sometimes Sweet Chestnut, Turkey Oak or birches. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Horse Chestnut, Beech, Rowan and occasionally Black Poplar.
