Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Forewing: 15 to 17mm

Habitats: Woodland clearings and rides, hedgerows, grasslands, grassy heathland, road verges, sand-dunes and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds nocturnally near the ground on Greater Plantain and other plantains, Common Knapweed, Dandelion, Knotgrass and other herbaceous plants. It hides in the leaf litter during the day. Pupation takes place in a cocoon under the soil.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Rough Hawkbit and Ribwort Plantain.
