Similar species: Fresh specimens of White-mantled Wainscot Archanara neurica have a white line on the edge of the collar and white marks on the oval and the kidney mark rather than just on the kidney mark, giving the appearance of three white spots within a black longitudinal streak. It lacks the central spot on the underside of the forewing and the hindwing.

Forewing: 12 to 15mm

Habitats: Reed-beds and ditches with a margin of reeds.

Habits: The moth is an occasional visitor to sugar. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds inside the stems of Common Reed, changing stems as it grows. It pupates head downwards inside the stem close to the ground.
