RDB England
Photedes captiuncula tincta (Kane, 1895)
West Ireland
Similar species: The smallest of the native noctuids. If care is taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish 'minors' or other species.
Forewing: 7 to 9mm
Habitats: Limestone grassland, limestone pavement, dry grassy south-facing slopes and grassy coastal cliffs
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed. The male flies erratically in afternoon sunshine before diving into the grass. It is also nocturnal and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Glaucous Sedge, possibly other sedges and Blue Moor-grass. In captivity it has been reared on Garden Canary-grass (Gardeners Garters).
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Tufted Hair-grass.
