Local

Similar species: Rustic Shoulder-knot Apamea sordens has a distinct black basal streak and a more evenly coloured less marbled forewing.

Forewing: 16 to 21mm

Habitats: Dry calcareous grassland, downland, coastal cliff-tops, arable land, woodland rides and margins and occasionally damp grassland.

Habits: The moth nectars at flowers and comes to sugar and light.

Foodplant: The larva initially feeds on the flowers and seeds of Common Couch-grass, Annual Meadow-grass, Cock's-foot, cereals and other grasses. When larger it feeds nocturnally on the leaves, hiding on the ground in the day. It pupates under the soil.
