Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 15 to 17mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, mature hedgerows with trees and wooded heathland.
Habits: The moth visits Ivy blossom and in the spring, sallows and Blackthorn blossom. It is attracted to sugar and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Apple, including fallen leaves. In captivity it will accept sallow, apple, blackthorn, plum, Dandelion and other low growing plants. It pupates in a soil-covered cocoon under the earth. It is thought to have an association with the ant Lasius fuliginosus.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Apple, plums, Blackthorn, oaks, roses, Bramble, sallows, docks, strawberry and Dandelion.
