Similar species: White-spotted Pinion Cosmia diffinis has much larger and brighter white markings on the leading edge of the forewing. Lesser-spotted Pinion Cosmia affinis has only a small, white marking on the leading edge of an orange-brown, rather than reddish forewing. The paler round oval with a dot in the centre is usually well marked.
Forewing: 13 to 16mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens.
Habits: The moth is attracted to honeydew, sugar and light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Bullace, apples, English Elm, Small-leaved Elm and Wych Elm. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on limes, pear, poplars and willows.
