Local

Similar species: Black-banded Polymixis xanthomista statices is on average smaller (16 to 18mm) and usually has a darker, more defined band across the forewing and lacks a dark band across the hindwing.

Forewing: 17 to 22mm

Habitats: Coastal grassland, wasteground, damp meadows, gardens and occasionally more acid areas such as heathland.

Habits: The moth comes to sugar and light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds nocturnally on the flowers and leaves of Dandelion, plantains, docks, sorrel, Rosebay Willowherb, Red Valerian, garden mints, Delphinium, Daisy, Michaelmas Daisy, ragworts, ivy, currants, plums and many other herbaceous plants and shrubs. It hides low in the herbage during the day. It pupates under the soil in a tough cocoon.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on bellflowers, stitchworts, Honeysuckle and Barberry.
