Similar species: Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing Noctua janthe has a narrower dark border on the hindwing that does not follow the leading edge enclosing the yellow central area. A form that has been mistaken for Noctua tertia (from the eastern mediterranean) has a lighter, warmer brown forewing.
Forewing: 16 to 18mm
Habitats: In Britain it inhabits coastal grassland, vegetated shingle and sand-dunes.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in Britain. On the European mainland it had been recorded feeding on Common Nettle, primroses, violets, docks, elms, Honeysuckle, Spindle, Bramble, poplars and Hawthorn.
