Similar species: A distinctive brown to dark-brown moth with only dark outlines of the kidney mark, oval, dart and central cross-lines.
Forewing: 18 to 21mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows, marshes, fens and gardens.
Habits: The moth visits flowers and is attracted by sugar. It comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on Broad-leaved Dock and other herbaceous plants as well as trees and shrubs including Hawthorn, Blackthorn, roses, birches and sallows. It hides in loose soil or leaf litter during the day. It pupates just below the soil surface.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Aspen, Goat Willow, Grey Willow, currants, Lilac, Dog-rose and Honeysuckle.
