Nepticulidae

04.032 Speckled Hazel Dot Stigmella floslactella (Haworth, 1828)

Common

Similar species:

Forewing: 2.5 to 3mm

Habitats: Woodland, hedgerows or wherever the foodplants are found.

Habits:

Foodplant: The larva forms a slender, but then gradually widening gallery mine in a leaf of Hazel or Hornbeam. The direction is independent of the leaf venation. The frass in a S. floslactella mine fills the entire corridor. In the case of S.microtheriella (which is found on the same foodplants), the frass at the beginning of the mine is linear. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
