Nepticulidae

04.051 Burnet Dot Stigmella poterii (Stainton, 1857)

Notable B

Similar species:

Forewing: 1.5 to 2mm

Habitats: Dry pastures, embankments, chalk grassland, mountain slopes.

Habits: The scottish moth on Cloudberry is single brooded.

Foodplant: The larva forms a short gallery mine which is at first narrow and tends to follow a leaf vein or leaf margin of Salad Burnet, Great Burnet, Tormentil or Marsh Cinquefoil. The mine then widens considerably and often forms a secondary blotch taking up most of the leaf. In Scotland it is also found on Cloudberry where the larva forms a contorted mine with broken linear frass, sometimes opening into a blotch with scattered frass. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
