Similar species:

Forewing: M 10 to 14mm, F wingless and wormlike

Habitats: Heathland.

Habits: The male flies in the evening.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Heather, heaths and grasses. It lives for two years pupating in May on tree trunks, posts, telephone poles and taller heather. It is occasionally found in numbers. On emergence the male pupal case is left half exposed from the larval case, while the females pupal case is retained within the larval case.
