Forewing: M 9 to 12mm, F wingless and worm-like
Habitats: Heathland, birch scrub and acid grassland.
Habits: The male flies at night and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on grasses, Heather, heaths, birches and other shrubs. It overwinters twice, pupating in May on Heather, leaves and tree trunks. On emergence the male pupal case is left half exposed from the larval case, while the females pupal case is retained within the larval case.
