Habitats: Deciduous woodland, heathland, moorland, marshes, fens and river-banks.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva mines male catkins or a bud of birch or Alder where it overwinters. In April large numbers of larvae drop on silk threads. They then burrow into small crannies to pupate. It has also been found pupating in Birch Polypore fungus.
