Similar species: Borkhausenia fuscescens is smaller (3.5 to 5.5mm).

Forewing: 7.5 to 12mm

Habitats: Houses, out houses, farm buildings and food and textile warehouses.

Habits: The moth can be found resting on inner walls during the day and later comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds from a flimsy silk web on animal and vegetable matter, seeds, dried plants, wool, fur, skins, dead insects, frass, cotton, books and detritus in bird' nests. It pupates in the feeding place in a strong silk cocoon covered in food debris.
