Habitats: Deciduous and coniferous woodland, mature hedgerows, parks and gardens.
Habits: The moth flies during the morning and at night. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds from a frass covered silk tube on dead wood under the bark of many deciduous and coniferous trees. It has also been recorded from rotting Daldinia concentrica fungus. It pupates in a cocoon of silk and frass under bark.
