Similar species: Most similar to Blastobasis phycidella and more strongly marked specimens of Blastobasis vittata, but also Blastobasis rebeli except the inner crossline is a deep 'V' shape. For positive identification check the genitalia.
Forewing: 7 to 12mm
Habitats: Woodland and mature hedgerows. It was first recorded in Britain from East Sussex in June 2023. It was originally from the Eastern United States, but has spread across to California and north to southern Ontario, Canada. It has now colonised Europe, and is present from Germany to Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia and Ukraine.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds within the fruit of oaks and chestnuts.
