Similar species: Males of Aphelia unitana lack the orange-yellow colouring on the thorax and at the base of the males forewing, although sometimes it may be slightly yellow.

Habitats: Scrub, rough grassland, calcareous grassland, wasteground and sand-dunes.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed in the day. It flies during the evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The polyphagous larva feeds in the spun leaves of Common Couch-grass, Timothy grass, Cock's-foot, Common Reed, knapweeds, scabious, Colt's-foot, Marsh Marigold, Meadow-sweet, plantains and other herbaceous plants and occasionally (especially in Scotland) oaks, Beech and Sitka Spruce. It pupates in a folded edge of a leaf or its larval spinning.
