Similar species:
Forewing: 9 to 13mm
Habitats: Mountains, inland hills and coastal cliffs.
Habits: The moth can be found resting on rocks during the day. It flies from dusk and later comes to light.
Foodplant: There are two forms, both of which overwinter in an early instar. In the spring the inland form bellana feeds from a silk tube among the roots of Sheep's-fescue and Common Rock-rose, on the roots and leaf-tips. The coastal form colquhouna feeds within the roots of Sea Plantain or in a silk tube on a woody stem of Thrift, while feeding on the leaves. It has also occasionally been found under the roots of Hoary Rock-rose, Bird's-foot Trefoil and Irish Saxifrage where Thrift is adjacent. It pupates in the silk gallery or in a rock crevice.
