Similar species:
Forewing: 7 to 9mm
Habitats: Lowland grassland, downland, commons and other grassy places where the foodplant is present.
Habits: The moth rests on its foodplant in the day, flies from dusk and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The summer larva feeds in the upper stem of Common Knapweed below the flower, where it eats the ripening seeds. It then pupates in the seed-head. The autumn generation which feeds in the spring after overwintering, bores the pith of the growing stems, causing them to wilt or turn brown. This generation pupates in a cocoon in the earth or in leaf litter.
