Similar species: Aethes cnicana is on average slightly smaller and has a narrower dorsal band without the large curved indentation on its outer edge.
Forewing: 7 to 9mm
Habitats: Open woodland, scrub, field margins and wasteland.
Habits: It flies from late evening and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the seeds of Greater Burdock and probably Lesser Burdock. It is full-fed by late October when it overwinters in a cocoon in the spun seed-head or more usually in the leaf litter on the ground. It pupates in this spinning in early May.
