Tortricidae

49.157 Plum Tortrix Hedya pruniana (Hübner, [1799])

Common

Similar species: Hedya nubiferana has less contrasting markings in the white area of the forewing and lacks the dark blotch in the apex. The two black dots on the forward edge of the white area are on the trailing side of the wing fold rather than the leading edge side of the fold. The smaller of these two dots is usually to the forward end of the larger dot.

Forewing: 7 to 8.5mm

Habitats: Open woodland, scrub, hedgerows, orchards and gardens.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed by day, flies in the late evening and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds from within spun young shoots and later two flat-spun leaves or a folded leaf of Blackthorn, Wild Plum or Wild Cherry, or less often on Crab Apple, pears, Hazel or Hawthorn. It pupates in the larval spinning or a freshly spun leaf.
