Similar species: Phiaris schulziana is on average a larger species (6.5 to 12mm) with superficially similar markings. Both species easily lose the red to brown scales leaving areas of the black ground colour.
Forewing: 6 to 7.5mm
Habitats: Sheltered birch and pine heathland.
Habits: The moth flies on sunny afternoons, during the evening and at dusk.
Foodplant: The larva feeds from a silk gallery on mosses such as Broom Forkmoss.
