Habitats: Open woodland, parkland, boggy moorland, marshes, fens and river-banks.
Habits: The moth can be made to drop to the ground from the high branches where it rests, by sharply banging the trunks or branches. The moth flies high around the trees during the evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The overwintering larva feeds on the buds and catkins of birches, Alder and Goat Willow. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
