49.250 Fir-bud Tortrix Epinotia nigricana (Herrich-Schäffer, 1851)

pRDB1

Similar species:

Forewing: 5 to 6mm

Habitats: Conifer plantations.

Habits: The moth flies around the tops of firs during afternoon sunshine.

Foodplant: The larva feeds in the terminal buds on the side shoots of European Silver Fir. At first it bores the base of a terminal bud (they are usually in threes), it then eats the contents of each bud until there is one large cavity. It either pupates in a grey cocoon in the angle between the base of two leaves or spun in the needles on the ground.
