49.253 Silver-barred Tortrix Epinotia fraternana (Haworth, 1811)

Notable B

Similar species:

Forewing: 4.5 to 6mm

Habitats: Conifer plantations, mixed woodland, parkland and gardens.

Habits: The moth can be disturbed by tapping the branches of firs. It flies around the tips of the higher branches of firs on sunny afternoons.

Foodplant: The larva at first mines the leaves of European Silver Fir and Giant Fir. It mines from the needles middle, at first to the tip and then from the middle to the base. It later constructs a neat spinning of needles and white silk, but it still mines the needles. The full-fed larva constructs a cocoon amongst fallen needles on the ground, overwinters, then pupates in April.
