Habitats: Open woodland, parkland, scrub, heathland, mosses and gardens.
Habits: In the day the moth rests on birch trunks and foliage, where it can easily be disturbed. It flies at dusk and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds in the catkins of birch sometimes causing a distortion. It gradually lines the catkin with silk until it is totally hollowed out. In April it pupates in the catkin or in the leaf litter or in the earth.
