49.279 Common Cloaked Tortrix Gypsonoma dealbana (Frölich, 1828)

Common

Similar species: Gypsonoma sociana has a white face and has a dark area in the orange apical blotch. Gypsonoma aceriana has a dark spot in a more obscure yellow to pale orange apical blotch, is paler in the outer area of the wing and lacks the longitudinal dark dash at two thirds of the wing length.

Forewing: 5 to 6.5mm

Habitats: Woodland rides, clearings and margins, parkland, hedgerows and gardens.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed from tree trunks or foliage in the day. It flies high around the trees at dusk. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva overwinters while small on Hawthorn, oaks, poplars, Hazel and sallows in a gallery on the surface of a twig next to a bud. It eats into the bud when it recommences feeding in the spring and later lives in the folded edge of a leaf or spun leaves. If on poplars or sallows it feeds in the catkins. It pupates in the larval habitation or in a cocoon in the soil.
