49.300 Pine Bud Moth Pseudococcyx turionella (Linnaeus, 1758)
Notable B
Similar species:
Forewing: 6.5 to 6mm
Habitats: Pine woodland and heathland with pines.
Habits: The moth flies from late afternoon onwards and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds in the terminal shoot buds of Scots Pine and occasionally Lodgepole Pine or Black Pine. It eats out the shoot (causing only slight resin flow at the bud base), then tunnels along the stem where it overwinters. In early spring the larvas presence can be detected by the central aborted bud surrounded by growing shoots. These shoots fork out from the aborted bud. The larva pupates in the aborted bud before the buds shoot.
