Similar species: Rhyacionia buoliana has a tornal blotch that often stretches right across the wing. It also has a much larger crest.
Forewing: 7.5 to 11mm
Habitats: Coniferous plantations and suburban habitats.
Habits: The moth flies at dusk and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds in the shoots of Scots Pine, causing resin to flow and distorting the bud. It pupates in a cocoon in the larval habitation.
