Similar species:

Forewing: 5.5 to 8mm

Habitats: Calcareous grassland, embankments and open woodland.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed from the foodplant during the day. It flies at sunrise and in the evening and later it will occasionally comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva spins the terminal shoots of Perforate St. John's-wort, Hairy St. John's-wort and also Rose-bay Willowherb and Bird's-foot Trefoil, forming an untidy, lop-sided spinning, where it eats out the growing shoot, and causes withering and discolouration. The occasional second generation will feed on the flowers and seeds. It pupates in a cocoon amongst moss or in the soil.
