49.357 Plum Fruit Moth Grapholita funebrana Treitschke, 1835
Local
Similar species:
Forewing: 4.5 to 7mm
Habitats: Woodland margins, hedgerows, scrub, orchards and gardens.
Habits: The moth flies in the evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva at firsts eats into the fruit near the stalk, then feeds in the fruits of Blackthorn, Bullace, Damson, Greengage and other cultivars. It usually burrows in near the stone. It can be detected by the brown liquid and frass oozing from the original hole. It is full-fed by late August, when it leaves the fruit to spin a cocoon in a sheltered spot such as under bark, in rotten wood or amongst moss. It overwinters in the cocoon and pupates there in April.
