49.363 Oak Gall Moth Pammene argyrana (Hübner, [1799])
Local
Similar species: Pammene albuginana has a less defined dorsal blotch, more streaky orange markings, less patches of white scales in the inner third of the forewing with orange rather than cream or white scales at the base. If in doubt or the specimen is worn, check the genitalia.
Forewing: 4.5 to 6mm
Habitats: Woodland, parkland and scrub.
Habits: The moth rests on tree trunks during the day. It flies in the late afternoon and evening and later comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva lives in young Spongy Galls on oaks (caused by Hymenoptera; Biorhiza). In September the full-fed larva constructs a cocoon in the gall, in moss or under bark. It then overwinters and pupates in March.
