Similar species: There is a rare form with yellow spots. The only British burnet with six spots.
Forewing: 15 to 19mm
Habitats: Grasslands, including downland, coastal slopes, sand-dunes, long disused quarries, woodland rides and clearings and old pasture.
Habits: The male is very active in sunny weather while looking for females. Both sexes nectar at thistles and Common Knapweed.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Common Bird's-foot Trefoil and sometimes Greater Bird's-foot Trefoil. The larva may overwinter twice and pupates in a papery cocoon exposed high on a grass stem.
