Habitats: Mainly heathland and downland.

Habits: The moth rests on gorse during the day. It is nocturnal and comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds in a silk lined gallery within the Birch Cramp Balls fungus Daldinia vernicosa on burnt gorse and young birches. The full-fed larva burrows under the bark or into dead wood to overwinter. It pupates the following May. It sometimes overwinters in the fungus.
