Habitats: Woodland, scrub grassland, arable land, farm buildings and gardens.

Habits: The moth is nocturnal, comes to light and sometimes to sugar.

Foodplant: The larva feeds from a silk gallery on decaying vegetable matter, including thatch, hay, witch's brooms, birds' nests, squirrel dreys, piled leaves and grass clippings. It is sometimes gregarious. Pupation takes place in a silk cocoon in the feeding place, possibly after overwintering as a full-fed larva.
